INTER REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP & CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT
COMPETITION RULES 2008

1. GENERAL

These Rules apply to The Inter Regional Championships and Challenge Tournament.
The Inter Regional Championship (with Wales by invitation) will comprise two divisions of 8
regions each. After 7 rounds the teams in each division will be seeded for a further 5 rounds.
Each Regional team will comprise 8 open teams and 1 junior team.

In case of an odd number of teams from each region a “Combined Team” may be formed
composed of the previous year’s Inter-Regional Championship winners - 4 teams, the 2nd
and 3rd place – 2 teams each and the Junior team is arranged by the winning region from
the above 3 regions.

The Inter Regional Challenge Tournament will be one division played by 4 open teams from
each Region on a round robin basis.
Regulations for play shall be “The Official Rules of the Game of Petanque” (amended at
Grenoble on 21st September 2006).

2. ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to play for a region players must be English Petanque Association license
holders in the region they are representing. (With the exception of the “Combined” team.)
Licenses of all Regional team players and squad/team managers/coaches are to be
handed to the organiser before start of play. (It is the team manager’s responsibility to
ensure that all licenses are valid and have been signed by Club or Regional Presidents and
individual players.) Any player failing to produce a valid license will be fined £20 (Juniors £5).

3. STANDARD OF DRESS

All teams will be required to wear clean and smart regional uniform including tops and
bottoms. A top may be a shirt, polo shirt, tee shirt, fleece, jacket, blouson, sweatshirt, sweater or any similar garment. Bottoms may be short or long trousers as the individual prefers. Matching
tops and bottoms means the same colour and design.

To further clarify this rule, it is not necessary, for example, for a polo shirt to be the same
colour as a jumper; polo shirts within the team must match and jumpers (if worn) must also
match but not necessarily with the polo shirts. Clothing should fit and be clean, decent and
appropriate for purpose. In the case of inclement weather, waterproofs may be worn and
will not have to match.

4. PLAYING AREA
The playing area will be clearly defined and no alcohol or smoking is allowed inside the
defined playing area.
Mobile phones must be turned off inside the playing area at all times.
